Nation's No. 3 OLB slated for long-awaited Clemson visit

After receiving an offer from Clemson last May, Mikel Jones is close to making a long-anticipated visit to Tigertown.

The linebacker from Hialeah (Fla.) Mater Academy is slated to attend Clemson’s spring game on April 8 with his family and coach.

“I’m very excited,” Jones told The Clemson Insider. “I was supposed to go up there last summer but unfortunately I couldn’t make it, so I’m looking forward to this visit for sure.”

There’s a lot that Jones, the nation’s No. 3 outside linebacker in the 2019 class, has wanted to check out for a while.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the stadium and touching the Rock,” he said. “Also seeing the new football facility and the players’ dorms.”

He is ready to begin building a relationship with position coach Brent Venables and head coach Dabo Swinney, as well.

“He seems like a very positive person to be around,” Jones said of Venables. “I’m looking forward to meeting him and coach Swinney.”

Jones (6-2, 210) owns other offers from Georgia, Iowa State, Louisville, LSU, Syracuse, Temple, Utah and West Virginia. Clemson was first to offer on May 18, 2016, following his freshman season when he recorded 76 tackles, 12 sacks, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Clemson and Georgia are the early frontrunners for Jones, who said the Tigers are in a good shape heading into his visit.

“Yes,” he said, “they’re definitely still in good standing.”

Jones is rated by 247 as the No. 52 overall prospect in his class. Up next for him is a visit to LSU next weekend after receiving an offer from the SEC’s Tigers in late February.
