Spring practice may be coming to a close this week for the defending national champions, but there is still work to be done before Clemson heads into the summer.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says he and the coaches have a few questions they would like to get an answer or two from, and they figure the best way to do it is to put the team in situations they have not been in this spring. For instance, when the Tigers return to the practice field on Wednesday, the second-team offense will go up against the first-team defense a little more and vice versa than it has at any point this spring.

“What I want to see on Wednesday is I want to see those twos step up and see them compete,” Swinney said. “I want to see, hopefully, that there is not a lot of drop off.”

Clemson will practice like it did on Monday as the first half of practice will be dedicated to individual workouts and drills, while the second half will be a mini-scrimmage.

“We have a couple of situations we have  not hit yet that we will cover on Wednesday to make sure that we kind of touch all the bases so we can teach,” Swinney said.

Because the Orange & White Game, which will be Saturday, splits up the roster, Wednesday’s mini-scrimmage will be the last true evaluation the coaches can make off their personnel in live competition.

“We always pretty much go good-on-good, but then Wednesday will be a day where we probably do a few more ones on twos and challenge them in that regard,” Swinney said. “Sometimes you get so conditioned, but we believe in (mixing it up). We are good-on-good all the time and I will mix it up some on Wednesday and see how some of those young guys respond. They like to say they are ready so now we are going to see because it is mixed up a little bit.”

Swinney said they will also do a little more special teams work in Wednesday’s practice

“We just need to finish up a couple of situations we need to cover,” he said.

On Thursday the coaching staff will split up the team and then they will go over what they need the players to run during their skills and drills workouts this summer.

The Orange & White Spring Game is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Death Valley. Tiger Walk will be at 1:05 p.m.
