It’s a tough task finding a tight end that that has a blend of size, strength and speed combined with blocking and pass-catching abilities.

While Jordan Leggett was not always the best blocker, he gave Clemson a weapon that was difficult to match by opposing defenses, and that made the Tigers’ offense both effective and dangerous.

While Clemson has several capable backups, as well as a raw but physically talented player in 2018 tight end commitment Braden Galloway, it is still looking around to see if it can nab another big pass-catcher that can fill Leggett’s shoes in the future.

Missouri City (Texas) Ridge Point 2018 tight end Mustapha Muhammad fits the mold of an athletic and capable tight end with good hands.

Muhammad, the No. 1 ranked tight end by ESPN, fills out nicely, standing at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds.

Muhammad told TCI that he recently visited Southern California and UCLA and said the trips made his decision even tougher.

“They went well. I really like L.A.,” he said. “Yes, a lot more difficult. Two very good universities athletically and academically.”

While he doesn’t have anything planned for the rest of the summer yet, a Clemson visit could be in the works.

“Nothing planned yet…but I’d like to go back to Clemson for their BBQ in July,” Muhammad said.

He also told TCI that he regularly talks with coaches Danny Pearman and Mike Reed about “mainly getting back for a visit.”

Muhammad said he plans on narrowing his recruitment down to a top five in August, and will make his final decision on National Signing Day.

Since posting his top 10 a month ago, Muhammad said that all of those schools are recruiting him hard and “evenly in the mix.”

Although all of his top schools are even, he did mention that there are several things that stand out about the Clemson program to him.

“Well obviously they just won that natty and that’s big to have the opportunity to join a winning team,” he said. “Also the culture there is very special…Family atmosphere.”

If and when he gets back to Clemson for a visit, Muhammad said that “Learning more about their academics and business school…also campus life and housing,” will be key for him.
