The Central High School football team in Phenix City, Ala., is loaded with talent. The headliner of the 7A powerhouse is five-star wide receiver Justyn Ross, a major target of many college programs including Clemson, but the list just begins there.

One of the players who is likely to start seeing scholarship offers come his way sooner than later is 2020 quarterback Tucker Melton (6-3, 185).

Auburn, Florida State and Troy are among the schools showing early interest in the rising sophomore, for reasons such as his balanced arm, mobility and upside.

“I am a leader on and off the field and feel as if I set a good example for my teammates,” Melton said of his strengths to TCI. “I have a strong, accurate arm and I can make plays with my feet when I need to, but would rather use my eyes and arm to make any throw on the field.”

Melton, a two-sport athlete who also plays baseball, hasn’t had much time to make visits this summer between his team’s football and his travel baseball schedule, but has been to Auburn, Georgia and Troy.

One school he really wants to see in person is Clemson.

“It’s my dream school,” he said, “so I would love to visit soon.”

Clemson piqued his interest during the Tajh Boyd era, and that interest has grown over the years.

“I loved Tajh Boyd when he was there, and then Deshaun (Watson) came along and then I really started to pay attention to the details of recruiting,” Melton said. “Coach (Dabo) Swinney is a great coach and he’s a players’ coach.

“I’ve just fallen in love with the program, the facilities and the drive they have to make every player great on and off the field, and their drive to win every day.”

Melton is competing for Central’s starting quarterback job with 2019 quarterback Peter Parrish, who picked up his first offer from Mississippi State last month.

Each showed well in the team’s spring scrimmage, with Melton throwing for 78 yards and the game’s only touchdown pass in the first half.
