Gadsen (Ala.) Southside’s Gavin Orr competed at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June after receiving an invitation from offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell.
Orr plays tight end/H-back in his high school team’s run-heavy offense, but worked out with the offensive linemen upon Caldwell’s request.
He impressed the Tigers with his showing, and Caldwell has kept in touch since.
“Coach Caldwell has been messaging me just checking in,” Orr told TCI. “He’s been straight up with me, (saying) they have offered a few O-line guys and are waiting to see what they do. He’s told me to be patient and Clemson is definitely worth waiting for.”
Orr hails from the same hometown as former Clemson head coach Danny Ford, and he is also related to the man that led the Tigers to their first national title.
“My grandmother and coach Ford are first cousins,” Orr said. “My dad’s side of the family has always been big fans of Clemson ever since he coached there.”
Orr might be the biggest fan following his time spent in Tiger Town.
“I really felt like there was a sense of family with the coaches and players,” he said. “I loved the hometown feel of the campus, plus the prestigious academics. Then of course the winning culture and the best coaches and facilities in the country, there’s really nothing not to like about Clemson.”
Orr (6-4, 270) has FBS offers from App State, Army, Central Michigan, Georgia State, Middle Tennessee and Troy. The 4.0-GPA student also carries offers from five Ivy League schools and a number of Division I-AA programs.
“I have several schools that have offered me that I really like, but a Clemson offer would be at the top of my list,” he said. “My family and I love everything about Clemson.”
Caldwell views Orr as an interior offensive lineman.
Orr also visited UAB, Wake Forest, Southern Miss and Furman this summer. He hopes to return to Clemson for a game in the fall.
