McCloud working at DB, could it be permanent?

Clemson wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud is working at cornerback. That’s right cornerback.

Head coach Dabo Swinney decided to put the wide receiver at corner so he can stay sharp. McCloud, who injured his wrist over the summer, can’t catch the football due to a cast on his hand so when he is unable to work with the receivers he is working with the cornerbacks.

“He has a cast on his hand so he can’t do a lot so we have actually worked him on defense some,” Swinney said after practice on Saturday. “We have sent him over. He has worked both receiver and DB. We are just trying to continue to use him in a lot of different ways so we sent him over and he did some back peddling. Then he came back and ran routes.

“He can’t catch the ball right now, but he can go over and cover. It has been kind of fun watching him because he is probably one of those rare guys that if you needed him he could probably play either side of the ball so we are kind of taking advantage a little bit of the time with him having some fun there, too.”

Swinney would not say if McCloud’s move is temporary or not. He said it depends on how McCloud does and how the other defensive backs do as well. Swinney said they are not just playing him there to play him. If he is better than somebody over there or will allow the coaches to have a little more flexibility, then Swinney will not hesitate to move McCloud to defensive back.

However, the coaches are a long way away from making a decision on any of that right now.

“It depends on how he does,” the Clemson coach said. “We don’t really do anything to waste time. That is something that we actually talked about his summer and he was kind of open to it because we know what he can do (at wide receiver) but he might be a guy that can go and work nickel or we can take a guy and put him at nickel and he can be just a corner guy or an emergency guy.

“We used to do Adam Humphries that way, and Adam actually played in a couple of games. But Ray-Ray has a little more wherewithal to him. It is pretty natural for him. He is just a special talent.”
