Unplugged: Clelin Ferrell

The media spoke with Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell after the first fall scrimmage this past Saturday.

Ferrell discussed the defenses’ performance in the two-hour scrimmage plus what he thought about his performance. The redshirt sophomore finished the scrimmage with a team-high six tackles, including a team-high three tackles for loss and one sack.

Clemson had 14 tackles for loss overall.

Question: Some people said the defense performed better than the offense today. Would you say so?

Ferrell: “I can’t really speak from that side. For me, being a guy who was on this defense last year I would say it just wasn’t good enough. I feel like we have a lot of things we have to work on. It was a lot of good things though. A lot of young guys got some good experience, but it was a lot of things I feel like we weren’t locked in mentally. But there were some good things out there don’t get me wrong. I just feel like it was an okay day. It could have been a lot better.”

Question: What are your thoughts on the offense that you saw out there?

Ferrell: “It was good. They were competing. I look forward to every day going against those guys. Just seeing how they are going to go out there and fight because we are a very talented group, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to see those guys out there competing. That’s just what they do. They are really hard working and they got us on a couple of plays so it was good today.”

Question:  When you come back Monday what do you work on? What will you take from the scrimmage and work on?

Ferrell: “You just take the little things. Obviously the big things, those might take a little bit longer. You just take a couple of small things at a time and work on them day by day. You can’t really try to get better at everything when you come back on Monday, but you just try to take a few things at a time and that is going to help us a whole lot just getting better and getting ready for the season.”

Question: How do you feel about your performance in the scrimmage today?

Ferrell: “I feel like it was just okay. I didn’t practice this whole week, but me being one of the leaders on this defense, I feel like regardless of that fact, when I step on the field I have to perform and go out there and lead. But I feel like it was just okay. I had a couple of mistakes and made a couple of plays, but it was an okay day for me I feel like.”

Question: What were some positives you took away from the defense today?

Ferrell: “I really like how we came out and how we got after the offense. The biggest thing that I didn’t like was that we really didn’t finish well, like Coach (Dabo) Swinney was saying, especially on the goal line. But I feel like we came out really well and just stoned them from the jump.”
