4-star ATH: ‘Clemson has always been a dream school for me’

Jashon Watkins is one of the top all-around athletes in the class of 2019. The four-star from East Nashville Magnet in Nashville, Tenn., racked up more than 1,000 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore last season while recording 40 tackles on defense.

Watkins stands at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds. He is lengthy, athletic and played all over the field for his team last year at safety, cornerback, wide receiver and quarterback.

So, it’s no surprise Watkins is being heavily pursued by power conference programs. His offer list includes Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Oklahoma and Tennessee among others.

Having just started his junior year, he isn’t citing any leaders or in a rush to render his college decision.

“Not right now,” Watkins told TCI. “I’m just keeping my options open.”

One option Watkins would be thrilled to have is Clemson, and he is hoping to add an offer from the Tigers moving forward.

“Honestly it would mean the world to me,” he said. “Clemson has always been a dream school for me, and I love the fact that Clemson has that winning and championship mentality.”

There is mutual interest between Clemson and Watkins, he said.

“They send tons of mail and talk with my coaches all the time,” Watkins said. “They’re very interested in me and can’t wait for me to come up for a visit.”

Watkins wants to do just that and experience the game-day environment in Death Valley this season.

“I will be hoping to experience a welcoming family and a hype crowd that’s really into the game,” he said.

Watkins named Alabama, Florida, Ohio State and Oklahoma as the schools he feels are showing the most interest currently. He hopes to visit Alabama, Florida and Ohio State this season as well.

Watkins, who probably projects best as a safety at the next level, is ranked by ESPN as the No. 9 athlete and No. 135 overall prospect in the 2019 class.
