Deon Cain isn’t surprised Kelly Bryant was named Clemson’s starting quarterback.

“He is in my class so I know what kind of worker he was at the end of the day,” the junior wide receiver said. “He was behind Deshaun Watson so I know he learned a lot about preparation and everything. Really, I’m not too shocked about his production right now.”

Cain isn’t shocked because he saw something that Bryant made evident in practice every day.

“His confidence, he comes to practice every day confident,” the Clemson receiver said. “He’s smart with the ball and his production is going to go up from here.”

Bryant ran away from the competition at quarterback in camp, beating out freshmen Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson for the starting job. In the Tigers’ last two scrimmages, the junior combined to complete 24-of-37 passes (.648) for 363 yards and two touchdowns against the first-team defense.

“I’m proud of him and his production,” Cain said. “I’m ready to go into the season with him. I’m locked and loaded on Kelly. I’m just ready to get to the first game and just see how it goes. I already know that I am comfortable with him so we are going to have a show going.”

With the team now knowing Bryant is the quarterback, the players can rally around him knowing he is the leader of the team, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

“That’s really a good thing because now we don’t have to worry about who is going to be the quarterback this week and this and that,” Cain said. “Now we can just focus on him going in to Game Week and already know … he can just keep it rolling.”

Cain worked a lot with Bryant in the spring and over the summer so playing with Bryant will be no different than any other time for him. He says every quarterback has a different style of throwing, but how they move the ball and everything is really the same. But having a starter, however, does help with the chemistry between the receiver and the quarterback.

“I have been working with all of our quarterbacks and I don’t really have a favorite because at the end of the day you don’t know what is going to happen,” Cain said. “So I just try to stay consistent. While we are in practice, me and Kelly already have that chemistry about everything so I’m glad it is here so we can just show it out on the field.”
