Clemson head coach football coach Dabo Swinney will make an average yearly salary of $6.75 million, including all signing and retention bonus. The new contract is an 8-year deal that will run through the 2024 football season and is worth $54 million.
Swinney was supposed to make $4.8 million in 2017, but he will now make $6 million this season. Swinney’s buyout is $6 million for the next two seasons (December 31, 2018) should he leave for another job, the largest buyout among the top 5 highest paid coaches.
The new deal makes Swinney the third highest paid coach in college football from an average per year standpoint, behind Alabama’s Nick Saban ($8.1 million) and Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh ($7.6 million).
The Compensation Committee of the Clemson University Board of Trustees approved the new contract on Friday morning in a teleconference call.
“What he has done with our program has been incredible,” Radakovich said. “He means so much to our athletic department and to our community. He and Kathleen are just incredible ambassadors for the institution and we are just happy we were able to come to an agreement prior to the football season.
“That was always our goal. We have been able to accomplish that and look forward to another great eight years.”
