Recruits react to Clemson's historic class

The first ever early signing period, which began on Wednesday, was certainly a success for Clemson. The Tigers inked two five-star recruits — offensive tackle Jackson Carman and defensive end K.J. Henry — in addition to four-star running back Lyn-J Dixon.

With two five-star prospects already on board entering the day in quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defensive end Xavier Thomas, the Tigers now have four committed five-stars. The only team in the country with more five-stars at this point in the cycle is Georgia, which currently has six. Furthermore, Clemson has three of the nation’s top five prospects according to ESPN – Lawrence (No. 2), Thomas (No. 3) and Henry (No. 5).

In all, Clemson signed 15 players, including 10 who had 4- and 5-star ratings according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Five of those players are ranked No. 1 in their respective states, the first time that has happened in Clemson history.

Though expected to sign a few more prospects in February, Clemson locked up the majority of its recruiting class Wednesday.

After the big day wrapped up, TCI reached out to a number of Clemson’s commits and other recruits for their reactions to Clemson’s signing day and historic class:

Trevor Lawrence, 2018 QB, Cartersville (Ga.) – Clemson signee: “Great day! Got some big time players.”

Mike Jones, 2018 LB, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy – Clemson signee: “It’s great to see the class finish out strong. I can’t wait to ball out with these guys and excited for the new guys that are joining the class!”

Josh Belk, 2018 DT, Richburg (S.C.) Lewisville – Clemson signee: “We’re about to blow the roof off of SC. It’s crazy to me because just the other day it seems like I was looking at college players online. Now some kid is about to be in the position that I was, so I have to continue to work hard.”

Darnell Jefferies, 2018 DT, Covington (Ga.) Newton – Clemson signee: “Complete and total excitement! I’m so glad and relieved that we got everyone who wanted to be a part of this historic class. I personally am overjoyed to finally be a Clemson Tiger!”

BT Potter, 2018 K, Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe – Clemson signee: “It’s amazing. I thought we would be getting some new additions today. It’s great to be a part of a class so good. I’m super excited to see what we will do while at Clemson.”

Jordan McFadden, 2018 OL, Roebuck (S.C.) Dorman – Clemson signee: “It’s very exciting. I really can’t wait to get on campus and go to work with these guys!”

Jaylin Simpson, 2019 DB, Saint Simons Island (Ga.) Frederica Academy: “It’s crazy. Good start for Clemson.”

Steele Chambers, 2019 ATH, Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity: “I think Clemson will always get a top recruiting class. As long as the coaches are offering a world class program they will get an elite group.”

Cam’Ron Kelly, 2019 DB, Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith: “It’s amazing. A very bright future!”

Tyler Venables, 2020 ATH, Central (S.C.) Daniel: “I think it shows Clemson’s at the top and they’re going to be for a while.”
