Drake Thomas a top LB target for the Tigers
Drake Thomas has emerged as one of Clemson’s top linebacker targets in the class of 2019.
The Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage standout received an offer from the Tigers last August and then visited Clemson for the Florida State game in November.
The Tigers got Thomas back on campus for another unofficial visit last month, and they have continued to recruit him hard since.
Thomas (6-1, 225) told TCI he has kept in regular contact with defensive coordinator Brent Venables and area recruiter Robbie Caldwell since he attended Clemson’s elite junior day on Jan. 20.
“They keep in touch pretty much on a daily basis,” Thomas said, “and I’ve talked to coach Venables and Caldwell on the phone multiple times.”
Thomas said he can envision himself playing for Venables at Clemson in the future.
“He’s a high-intensity guy,” Thomas said, “and he’s really cool too.”
Linebacker is a position of need for Clemson in the 2019 class, as the Tigers are set to lose several scholarship linebackers following the 2018 season.
Clemson’s coaches have told Thomas he would have an opportunity to contribute early for the Tigers.
“It’d be a perfect time for me to come in with lots of linebackers leaving and I could have an opportunity to play early,” Thomas said of what he has heard from the coaches. “And also I’m their type of player and they love the way I play.”
As a junior last season, Thomas racked up 112 tackles along with three interceptions, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Thomas has accumulated over a dozen offers in total, including ones from NC State, North Carolina, Michigan, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
Thomas has yet to narrow down his recruitment but is looking to release a list of his top schools relatively soon.
“Maybe this spring is what I’m planning on,” he said.
Thomas also visited NC State recently and is scheduled to visit Virginia Tech this weekend. He’s thinking about visiting Tennessee moving forward as well.
