Of the four freshmen offensive linemen that enrolled at Clemson in January, it seems two—Mitch Hyatt and Jake Fruhmorgen—are ahead of the other two as the Tigers head into summer workouts next month.
But Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney isn’t counting out Noah Green and Zach Giella just yet for the fall.
“Yeah, they’ve all got a lot of work to do between now and then,” Swinney said earlier this week. “Zach and Noah are incredibly talented. I mean all four of those guys are. I have absolute zero doubt in their ability and their potential to be outstanding offensive linemen at this level.”
Heading into summer workouts, it appears Hyatt and Fruhmorgen are in position to get more playing time. Based on what we saw in the spring game and what was learned from the spring practices, Hyatt appears to be the second-team left tackle and Fruhmorgen is the second-team right tackle.
Also, there is speculation Hyatt could push Joe Gore of the starting spot at right tackle in fall camp if he is able to get a little bit stronger and bigger this summer.
“Mitch and Jake are a little ahead as far as they’re both playing tackle, a little bit,” Swinney said. “The transition was a little smoother for them. And Noah is a guy that I think is going to bring a ton of versatility to us. He and Zach both will, to be honest with you, just because of their size and athleticism.”
Swinney admits Giella has the biggest adjustment of the four. He comes from a small private school so adjusting to the speed and the physicality of the game is going to be the key for him. Obviously, going through the spring and the summer is going to help him transition a little easier than if he was coming to Clemson in July.
“I’m going to be real anxious to see those four guys, because this spring was awesome for them, just the experience, just getting thrown in there like that, and all the reps that they got and the installation,” the Clemson coach said. “I think now going back through everything this summer, getting it again, and then by the time camp comes, by the time we get to September, these guys are going to have had our installation three times.
“They’re going to make huge progress. They’re all wired the right way. They all want to be great. But just measuring transition right out of the gate, just when you’re trying to put it all together from a functionality standpoint, as far as the system, taking things from the meeting room to the practice field and all that, Jake and Mitch were a little ahead. But athletically, physically, ability, you know, Noah and Zach are as good as anybody we’ve got.”
