Perhaps the biggest development in the week that was the [autotag]Dabo Swinney Football Camp[/autotag] occurred once session two came to a close on Sunday afternoon.
Clemson was due for some good news on the defensive end recruiting front, and it came in the form of four-star [autotag]Tony Clayton[/autotag], who’s ranked by the 247 composite as the No. 10 weak-side defensive end in the country.
The Vienna-Dooly County (Ga.) rising senior took his first trip to Clemson on Sunday afternoon. That night, he told TheClemsonInsider that Clemson has vaulted to the top of his list.
“Just going there, it really felt at home to me,” Clayton said. “I felt really at home, because it’s just like here, nothing goes on here. Nothing goes on up there, except when they have games. Other than that, it’s a pretty chill campus. It pretty much reminds me of home.”
When it comes to organizing his list of suitors, Clayton wants to keep an open mind, but the Tigers have pulled ahead of the pack, which includes Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee and Auburn.
“I’m trying to give everybody a chance, give everybody a shot…but my No. 1 favorite is Clemson,” he said. “So, yeah, I kind of like them.”
ANOTHER 2018 INSTATE OFFER: Not long after Jeff Scott wrapped up session two with the wide receiver trio of Diondre Overton, Cornell Powell and James Robinson, he was on the phone with one of the top instate prospects in the class of 2018.
Scott offered Richburg-Lewisville defensive tackle [autotag]Josh Belk[/autotag] on Sunday afternoon, a day after he was in Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.
“Josh spoke to (Scott) around 1 or 2 o’clock and coach told him that he made a real good impression on everybody during his visit, very humble and a very hard-worker during camp,” Lewisville head coach Will Mitchell told TheClemsonInsider.
“(Belk) stood out and they felt like he would be a good fit for them. And they wanted to offer him a scholarship and for him and his family to try to find time this summer and come visit for the day.”
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: After picking up his first offer from South Carolina on Saturday, [autotag]Eric Douglas[/autotag] was seriously considering an early commitment to the Gamecocks.
The 2017 offensive lineman from Charlotte-Mallard Creek backed away from the thought once Clemson stepped forward with offer No. 2 on Sunday afternoon.
“Right now, I’m not ready to make a commitment right now. I think I was just — (Saturday), when I got that offer, it was the first one — I was just so happy,” Douglas said. “South Carolina and Clemson are in my top two right now. Those are, actually, the only two schools that I really wanted to offer me, so they happened to be my first two.
“Before I make a commitment, I’m going to make more visits to each school and go to some games before I can sit down and say that I want to commit.”
TEXAS GUN SLINGER: [autotag]Kellen Mond[/autotag] scooped up an Auburn offer before he arrived to Clemson on Wednesday, joining Arizona State, Baylor, Cal, Duke, Kansas, SMU and Texas Tech.
Clemson became No. 10 when the Tigers extended one to Mond, before he left campus, to catch a flight out of Atlanta.
“It is definitely one I have always wanted. Clemson is amazing and the coaches, along with the people, are amazing as well,” Mond said.
The four-star prospect from San Antonio-Reagan is listed by 247 as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2017.
