Lee explains his philosophy in recruiting

On Tuesday, Clemson’s new head baseball coach Monte Lee snagged his eighth baseball commitment for the 2016 class when Darlington’s Bryant Huggins pledged his loyalty to the Tigers following his visit to Clemson.

Lee has also been able to get three more kids to verbally commit for the 2017 class.

What is Lee’s strategy? How does he attack recruiting? What is his plan?

Lee told The Clemson Insider in an exclusive interview last Friday that Clemson will have three coaches on the road all the time, including himself.

“We are all going to recruit,” he said.

On Tuesday, Clemson officially announced Bradley LeCroy will hold his title as recruiting coordinator, but that’s not the way Lee will view it when it comes to recruiting.

“I want to look at my coaching staff and have the sense that we have three recruiting coordinators,” he said. “I have not labeled Bradley or Andrew (See) as recruiting coordinator. I told them from the very beginning, I want us all to be able to recruit, be very passionate about what we do and work extremely hard to recruit.

“We are all on the same page about what we are trying to do in a class. If See sees a guy that is a position player that fits what we are looking for or Bradley sees an arm or a pitcher and he knows what See likes in an arm, we are going to communicate about all the players and make the best decisions we can together. We are all going to recruit.”

Lee will obviously do what most head coaches do. He will be the last guy to talk to the family and close the deal. He will give campus tours and he will let Bradley and See give him their opinions on a prospect and what he should know about a certain young man.

Then Lee wants to take it one step further.

“I think it is important that I am out on the road, too,” he said. “I am not going to sit around on campus during the summer. I’m going to go on the road and I’m going to recruit. We have the ability now with the NCAA rules to have three coaches out there, so why not utilize that? I think it is foolish not to utilize that.

“I think in the past, one of the things that helped me is that I am a head coach that goes out and recruits. A lot of head coaches are doing that now, but I don’t ever want to change what is important to me. I want to be actively involved in every facet of our program.”

Lee plans on being behind home plate with LeCroy and See when watching a prospect. He plans to do the campus tours when a prospect visits Clemson and when they get to Clemson, and he plans on coaching them for as long as they are here.

“I’m not going to just stand out there and watch. I’m going to swing the Fungo bat and throw batting practice and coach these guys,” the new Clemson coach said. “I’m going to go in the weight room with them. I’m going to be a part of their experience at Clemson to the best of my ability.

“When a kid knows I am the one that is out there evaluating him and recruiting him, and I am the one that is hitting him ground balls and throwing him batting practice, and I am the one that is trying to make sure he is doing the right things academically, in the weight room and in the community, then I have a huge invested interest in the kid from the time he is 16 or 17 years old until he gets a degree from Clemson. When he leaves here, I want him to feel like I gave him everything that I can give him. That’s how I look at it. I want to maximize what I can do as a head coach and I want to surround myself with good people that can help us do the best job that we can in all areas of the program.”
