Chatter continues to swirl across the Internet about Clemson quarterback commitment [autotag]Zerrick Cooper[/autotag].
Like it or not, Tiger fans, the nemesis is back at it. Florida, for now, is taking a look at Clemson’s 2016 quarterback commitment.
Cooper confirmed the involvement with TheClemsonInsider on Tuesday night.
No plans have been arranged for next week’s Friday Night Lights camp in Gainesville, but Cooper would talk to his parents about it.
For now, “it’s hard to say” whether or not he’ll go through with the visit to Florida. [autotag]Clemson[/autotag] is scheduled to host Cooper on Friday for the annual All-In Cookout.
FORMER PITT PLEDGE OFFERED
Clemson’s pursuit of a cornerback for the class of 2016 took another step on Tuesday afternoon when a pair of offers went out.
In late March, three-star cornerback [autotag]Tony Butler[/autotag] committed to Pittsburgh over offers from Arizona State, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Purdue, Rutgers and Syracuse.
Michigan offered in April. Nebraska pulled the trigger in June.
Clemson’s interest began after Butler (Lakewood-St. Edward/Ohio) decommitted on July 3. Defensive backs coach [autotag]Mike Reed[/autotag] made the offer official on Tuesday during a conversation over the phone.
“I was expecting to get it. I thought it was going to be last week, but they weren’t in the office. They were on vacation, so I knew it would come either this week or next week,” Butler told TCI on Tuesday night.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect has gotten to know a little bit about Clemson over the last week-plus.
“I know they have a tremendous defense, defensive staff. They were in the top-five of every defensive category you can name, which is huge for me,” he said. “I know the coach is a great coach. They’ve only lost like eight games the past three or four years, which is crazy.
“I know about The Rock and stadium. I know a couple of things, but I don’t know everything just yet.”
Clemson is in line to receive an official visit, but no plans have been set. Butler has yet to make any official arrangements.
“I’ve got three in mind, but it’s kind of up in the air right now with the five officials,” he said.
As a junior, Butler had 27 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass breakups.
CLEMSON OFFERS GIVENS
[autotag]J.J. Givens[/autotag] popped up on the TCI radar in May at the Charlotte Opening Regional. Before he was named top defensive back at the event, Givens introduced himself moments after clocking a 4.56 in the 40.
He told TCI that afternoon that Clemson defensive cordnator Brent Venables had ramped up his interest.
On Tuesday, Venables offered Givens (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) as a cornerback.
A visit to Clemson was set for June 4, but those plans were cancelled. Ten days later, he committed during a camp visit to South Carolina.
Givens told TCI “there’s a possibility” that he’ll consider rescheduling the visit to Tigertown.
