Clemson expects to add LSU transfer

According to TCI sources, the Clemson baseball program is expected to pick up a transfer from Grayson Byrd, who spent his freshman year at LSU.

The son of former MLB pitcher Paul Byrd, he was selected by the Braves in the 39th round of the MLB draft after his senior year at King’s Ridge High School in Milton, Ga.

As a freshman at LSU, Byrd hit .212 (7-for-33) with nine RBI in 24 games (five starts) as the backup to Alex Bregman, the No. 2 overall pick earlier this summer in the MLB Draft.

Byrd (6-3, 180) is expected to enroll at Clemson in January. Because of NCAA transfer rules, he won’t be eligible to play for the Tigers until 2017.

Coming out of high school, Perfect Game named him to the Southeast Region First-Team.

“He was drafted in the 39th round of this year’s MLB Draft and would definitely have been drafted in the top 10 rounds if his commitment to LSU wasn’t so strong,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, before Byrd arrived in 2014.

“He is a smooth defender who can make all the plays and throws in the infield. Offensively, he possesses an excellent approach at the plate with outstanding strike zone discipline and ability to drive balls gap-to-gap from the left side of the plate. His 6-3 frame gives us the hope that he can continue to develop more strength, which could add more power down the road.”
