Shandon Goldman, the first official visitor for Brad Brownell’s signing 2016 class, visited Clemson last weekend.
The 6-8, 190-pound prospect from Lincoln, Ark. spoke with TheClemsonInsider earlier this week about the visit.
“It was a good trip. We were there on move-in weekend, so it was really busy. We didn’t get to see as much of the campus, but we got a little tour in on the golf cart, got to see the dorms and the student center and some of the classroom buildings. It was beautiful campus,” he said. “Got to eat some hometown Clemson meals at the Esso, Smokin’ Pig. That was a good time right there. That’s good food.
“Got to see some of the scrimmage in Death Valley, so that was pretty neat. It was a fun time.”
Assistant coach Richie Riley serves as Goldman’s primary recruiter to Clemson, but he was able to spend more time getting to know the head coach.
“I love the staff. I feel like I’ve got a good relationship with coach Riley and coach Brownell is a super dude. The staff was very nice and I enjoyed them,” Goldman said.
Clemson has yet to offer Goldman, who will move to St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Wisconsin on Thursday.
“We were watching film on some of the guys he’s had in the past. (Brownell) showed me where he would put me if I was there. We watched some film on Jaron (Blossomgame) last year and just kind of how they used the 4-man,” Goldman said.
Brownell wants to see more before offering a scholarship. The Tigers’ head coach will head to Wisconsin when next month’s recruiting period opens.
“(Brownell) said it was a hard decision, but he didn’t see me play enough live to offer me a scholarship, but he said he would love the style of play, my skill set and loved everything I could put on the table for the team,” Goldman said. “He said that it would be a good fit for both of us. We have the same view set on basketball, I guess you could say.”
Boston College, Utah State and Sam Houston State have offered. Colorado and Texas are also expressing interest.
Goldman’s next official visit could be to Boston College, but he hasn’t set a date.
