Clemson offers Smith

After starting off in impressive fashion, 2017 Wando wide receiver [autotag]OrTre Smith[/autotag] finally picked up an offer from Clemson.

Word came a day after Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott was in the Lowcountry for Wando’s game against Fort Dorchester, which featured a few notable prospects, including 2016 offensive lineman John Simpson and 2018 quarterback/athlete Dakereon Joyner.

Smith caught six passes for 66 yards in Wando’s 56-0 loss. A day later, he got word of Clemson’s offer.

“I gave coach Elliott a call. He told me to give him a call after the game,” Smith said.

Elliott serves as Clemson’s area recruiter in Charleston.

“He was like — at the camp, they saw something I needed to work on, so they didn’t offer me at the camp,” Smith said. “Beginning of my junior year, preseason, my coach did some highlight tapes. They were really impressed. They said I worked hard and I proved that I did what I was supposed to do, and they offered me.”

Heading into Friday’s game, Smith had 41 catches for 684 yards and nine touchdowns.

“(Elliott) was impressed that I stick with getting better, the things he told me to work on, I worked on it, and I didn’t stop working,” Smith said.

Smith will not visit Clemson for the Notre Dame game, but he is going to be back on campus “real soon.”

South Carolina hosted him for the Kentucky game earlier this season.
