Players give Swinney seal of approval for ‘Clemsoning’ rant

The way Artavis Scott sees it, the media does not like Clemson. Why else would someone make up such a term as “Clemsoning?”

“We just do things the right way and I don’t think people like that,” Scott said on Monday.

The Clemson wide receiver doesn’t believe Swinney’s rant, as good as it was, is going to prevent people from using the word, again.

“No, not at all, that is going to make them come even more,” he said. “People want to see us lose. I don’t know why. We have not done anything.”

Clemson tight end Jordan Leggett says it will take the Tigers winning a national championship or make the college football playoff to get the national media to stop using such a term.

“I have just never understood the word. Why is it around and why have they used it so often, it is just whatever. I don’t listen to it,” the junior said. “It is just motivation for me, really.”

The Tigers, who will host unranked Boston College on Saturday, have won 33 consecutive games against unranked opponents since a late season loss at NC State in 2011. When Clemsoning was brought up in a question following Saturday’s win over Georgia Tech, Swinney blew up and ripped the reporter who asked the question.

“I definitely wish we could have been there,” Leggett said. “The players would have given him a round of applauds. I felt kind of bad for the dude who asked the question. I guess that’s what you get, but it was funny to all of us.”

Center Jay Guillermo says he could not stop laughing when he saw the video.

“Not a lot of people see that side of Coach Swinney,” he chuckled. “We see it every now and again on the practice field and he will start ranting. So it is kind of funny whenever we see people and they are surprised he got so angry.

“It is kind of laughable to us because we see that side of him, not all the time, but every once in a while.”

Guillermo continued by saying Swinney will always step up to the plate for them, and has his players’ best interest at heart.

“He is the ultimate players coach,” Guillermo said. “He does everything. With his postgame speech he did after Notre Dame, he is not kidding. He fights for us and he gets us everything. The biggest thing we can do for him is win a football game.

“He is a guy we enjoy playing for. He is a guy we do not mind going out and battling for. He is a great leader. He is a great coach and he is someone who really cares about us and obviously that was pretty evident.”

Scott just loved watching it.

“People needed to hear that. I think with him saying that for us was a real good thing. Knowing our coach has our back … it was just great watching him go back at them,” he said. “I got hyped about it every time I watched it. I texted him last night, and told him how happy I was about it and it was great to just see it.”

Cornerback Cordrea Tankersley says Swinney’s rant is the kind of thing that fires up the team even more than before.

“It got me fired up,” he said. “This Clemsoning, the word, I don’t quite understand it. But like he said, we are human and if a team is better than us then they are better than us, but we are going to go out and compete. I just get tired of the analyst talking (bad) about us or whatever. The Clemsoning, I don’t understand it and I agree with him on everything he said.

“I just feel sorry for the next team because we feel like we have to go out and blow everybody out. That’s what we want to do. We want to win. If a team is better than us, then they are better than us.”
