Most rankings-makers in the recruiting world think Trey Smith is one of the 10 best offensive tackles in the class of 2017.
Scout (7) and 247 (5) both include him inside the 10. Rivals lists him at 24. All three services rate Smith as a four-star.
The junior from Jackson, Tenn. (University School) first visited Clemson last fall for the Georgia State game. He was back earlier this month for the Tigers’ win over Florida State.
“Clemson was awesome. From start to finish, it was a great visit,” Smith said. “I was able to see more of the campus this time, that was one of my requests I made. I went around with one of the grad assistant coaches, he took me out and toured me and my family. We saw the indoor facility, that was awesome. We saw the library and the water front, that was awesome, the amphitheater, I guess you would call that.
“That was pretty shocking to see all of that. The Clemson visit, that was one of my favorites this year. Just seeing coach (Dabo) Swinney after the game, talking with him, he’s really sincere as a coach. He’s just a great coach, really inspirational before the game. I love the game day tradition. When they ran down the hill, that was awesome.”
During the game, he kept a close eye on two freshmen.
“I was sort of zeroed in on Mitch Hyatt and Josh Sweat. I was really watching that battle. For a moment, that was really fun to watch,” Smith said. “I thought Mitch held his own the whole time and I thought Josh did a good job, too. That’s a pretty cool matchup. I saw something The Opening posted (on Twitter): ‘The Opening 2014, now a rematch in Death Valley.’ I thought that was sweet.”
Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and LSU have also hosted him for visits this season. All have offered.
“I’m still working to it. My dad, he doesn’t want me to release any info, which I think is smart,” Smith said, “Because, in my mind, I don’t have a favorite. I’m not going to lie, one day, I’ll wake up and I’ll be thinking of this school. The next day, I’ll be thinking of this school, so I’m a little bit fickle right now. I don’t really know which one.”
This summer, he’ll start to narrow down his options.
“I’ll probably have bearings a little bit better,” Smith said. “I want to enroll early, so I’m working towards that right now, seeing what I need, so it will probably be some time before then.”
