GREENVILLE – Avry Holmes set a Clemson career-high with 20 points as the Tigers cruised to a 76-56 win over USC-Upstate on Wednesday night.
The win improved Clemson to 5-2 as Upstate dropped to 1-8.
Clemson used a stretch of hot 3-point shooting to build a 23-14 first half lead. The Tigers connected from deep on four-consecutive trips, the final three were knocked down by Ty Hudson, who scored a career-high 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting.
The long-range shots continued to fall as Clemson led 39-22 at the half. For the game, the Tigers hit 13 of 29 shots from downtown.
Most of the early points came from inside the paint. Clemson went seven possessions before attempting a shot from outside the lane. The stretch was capped by a run-out dunk from Jaron Blossomgame, which gave the Tigers an early 8-3 lead. Clemson’s leading scorer ended with 11 points and six rebounds.
Donte Grantham missed all seven of his shots in the first half, including four from beyond the 3-point line. After one more miss from deep, Grantham canned his first trey with 15:15 to play, which upped Clemson’s lead to 47-28.
Seven different Tigers made 3s, including Josh Smith, whose first-career make from the outside gave the Tigers a 66-42 advantage with 7:36 left in the game.
Legend Robertin scored four points and grabbed two rebounds in his debut. The sophomore center from England was forced to sit out the first six games as the NCAA sorted through eligibility issues.
The night ended prematurely for Robertin, who went down late in the second half with a knee injury.
