Clemson picked up another 2017 quarterback commitment on Wednesday night when Chase Brice pulled the trigger.
The four-star from Loganville-Grayson (Ga.) joined five-star Hunter Johnson, who jumped on board on Monday night, to give Clemson two quarterbacks for 2017. That was the plan all along.
“They told me (that) from the very get go, because of their situation with their depth at quarterback,” Brice told TCI on Wednesday night, shortly after he announced the news on Twitter.
Clemson also has a 2016 commitment from Zerrick Cooper. By the time 2017 rolls around, Watson will be draft eligible. Kelly Bryant and Tucker Israel are the only other quarterbacks on the current roster that will still be on scholarship.
Brice was offered a chance to join them earlier this summer, when he visited for camp.
“I just knew from the beginning, when I stepped out there at Clemson. It took me a while to make sure,” Brice said. “When I talked to coach (Dabo) Swinney when I went to a practice earlier in the year, he just said you’ll know when you know. If it’s us, pray. If it’s not, then so be it. You’ll just know when you’re ready to commit, and I’ve known for a while.
“I was just waiting for the right time, the right time to get my confidence up to do it, to make sure it was the right decision. I talked it over with my family. It’s just been laying on my heart heavy and I just need to do it and get it off my chest and be a Clemson Tiger.”
Clemson’s 2015 season certainly helped reel him in.
“Why wouldn’t you want to jump on board and be a Tiger? It’s a great time. They’re 13-0, No. 1 in the country. They’re on a role with how they’re playing,” Brice said. “What they’re building there with coach Swinney and what they’re doing with the academic part of it, then the athletic part of it.
“What they’re building, coach (Thad) Turnipseed is building the fabulous facility and it’s only going to attract more, so I had to jump on while I could. I’m excited.”
