Former Clemson OL working Shrine Bowl

SPARTANBURG – Before Will Young went on to be an All-ACC offensive lineman at Clemson, he was a starter in the 1991 Shrine Bowl.

The Daniel product is now the head coach at Greer, where he’s been since 2005.

This week, he’s back in the Shrine Bowl as the offensive line coach for the South Carolina team. His starting left tackle and left guard, John Simpson and Cade Stewart, are both on Clemson’s recruiting radar.

Simpson continues to mull offers from Clemson, Florida and LSU, among others Stewart has yet to pick up an offer from the Tigers, but he could also score a spot as a walk-on or greyshirt.

“John has tremendous athletic ability for such a big kid,” Young said. “He played guard most of his career and we picked with the idea that we would move him to tackle.

“He’s adjusted very well to it. He’s done a good job with pass-pro, which we were hoping he would be able to do. You just don’t know. He hasn’t done much of it. His athletic ability allows him to do some things. He’s a very special player.

“Cade is just a big-ol-nasty, country boy,” Young said. “Typical offensive guard that does a good job. Very physical kid. Runs really well. He does a good job on his pulls. Typical Daniel lineman, a nasty country boy.”

Young added, “They’ve got blue facemasks now and I was giving him a hard time about that. He does a good job. He really has, played well. He’s had a good career, played really well at Daniel and playing really good for us here.”

For Young, who played at Clemson from 1992-95, it’s been fun watching this year’s group of Tigers.

“I’ll tell you what, I’ve enjoyed watching them. I don’t get over there very much, because I’m so busy with my own team, but I really do enjoy watching them,” he said. “They do a great job. Their coaches, obviously, do a great job with those kids. They’ve done a great job of recruiting, too.”

Young’s brother, Kyle, is an associate athletic director at Clemson. He was an offensive lineman from 1998-2001.
