Clemson basketball makes history

GREENVILLE — Clemson used a 19-3 run in the second half, including 13 straight points to win its fifth straight ACC game and its second straight over a top 10 team as the Tigers knocked off No. 8 Miami, 76-65, on Saturday at the Bon Secures Wellness Arena in Greenville.

The win over the Hurricanes, coupled with Wednesday’s win over No. 9 Duke, marked the first time in Clemson history it beat back-to-back top 10 teams. It was the Tigers third straight win over a top 25 team, also a first for the Clemson basketball program.

“I’m just really proud of my guys, and I am happy for my guys. I know how hard they work,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “I like to see my players have good experience. I don’t like to see them struggle and I don’t like to see them fail.

“We failed some early on and struggled. Obviously, I’m very proud of them and pleased with what they’re doing.”

Clemson also beat No. 16 Louisville at home last week. This marked just the fourth time in Clemson history the Tigers have won five straight ACC games. Clemson improves to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. The Tigers are in second place to North Carolina in the ACC standings.

“We did not talk about it much. We did not want it to consume us,” Clemson forward Jaron Blossomgame said.

Clemson grabbed its first lead since midway through the first half when Donte Grantham hit a jumper from the left side for a 61-60 lead with 5:07 to play. Jordan Roper followed a minute later to extend the lead to three with a jump shot from the left side for a 63-60 lead with 3:45 to go.

“It was not necessarily about making history, it was about taking care of business,” Roper said.

Roper then followed with a three-pointer, then Sidy Djitte got a dunk off an assist from Blossomgame. Roper then closed the run with a steal and a turnover to up the lead to 70-60 with 1:41 to play.

The Tigers sealed the win from the foul line as they wore down the Hurricanes (13-3, 2-2 ACC) in the final five minutes.

“We defend the ball so well, it is going to take a lot of energy and obviously, late in the game, they could not hold up,” Blossomgame said.

The Tigers outscored Miami 25-8 in the last 7:37 of the game.

Clemson was led by Blossomgame’s 25 points and 7 rebounds, while Roper had 18 points and six assists. He was also 6 of 11 from three-point range. Grantham had 14 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Miami led 34-32 at the break after both teams traded leads for much of the opening half. There were nine lead changes in the first half, but just one in the second. Clemson tied the game three different times before finally taking the lead for good with 5:07 to play.

Blossomgame scored six of Clemson’s first eight points, put cooled off. That is when Roper and Grantham got in the act as they both scored seven and six points in the first half.

The Hurricanes’ Tonya Jekiri was a pain in the Tigers’ side all afternoon. He had nine first half rebounds to go with his six points. Miami was also 5 of 6 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.

The Tigers were not too far off. Clemson connected on 4 of 8 shots from behind the arc. The Tigers made 46.2 percent of their shots to start the game.
