Perhaps the biggest addition to Clemson’s 2016 signing class is the biggest guy in the bunch.
Since Dexter Lawrence (6-5, 330) arrived to Clemson over a week ago, he was named by Scout as the No. 2 overall prospect in the class of 2016.
Lawrence joined an already talented group of defensive tackles that includes Carlos Watkins, Scott Pagano, Christian Wilkins, Albert Huggins and four-star freshman Nyles Pinckney.
Dan Brooks’ position room, once again, is chalk full of big, talented dudes.
“The obvious thing, from the outside world, is size, ability and a big guy that can run and that kind of thing,” he said of Lawrence. “As I got to know Dexter, he’s a very good person. He’s a good kid. What he was looking for, I think is all about Clemson. Family, his mom is a good lady.”
Clemson landed Lawrence over several big-time programs, including Alabama and Ohio State. NC State, the closest school to his home in Wake Forest, N.C., was also heavily involved.
There were some long-running relationships that also worked in the Tigers’ favor.
“His high school coach is actually a guy named Brooks, his son played for us when I coached for Mack Brown at North Carolina…Robbie Caldwell did a great job with him,” Brooks said.
The person away from the football field was just as appealing as the prospect Clemson’s staff saw under the lights.
“That’s the biggest thing we saw. Not only is he a great football player, but he’s a person that fits what we’re trying to do with our culture,” Brooks said.
He added, “Long, athletic. I went and watched him play basketball, the whole thing…he’s what we’re looking for.”
At Clemson, Lawrence could play a number of different positions along the defensive line.
“We’ve got to where our guys almost have to do both…but he’s a 3-technique, a big, tall, long 3-technique,” Brooks said. “We’ve got guys like Christian, Carlos and those guys — in the past, I coached left and right.
“When I had Albert (Haynesworth) and John (Henderson), I just played them left and right (at Tennessee). Either one of them could play nose. (Lawrence is) a guy that’s a good enough athlete that can line up on a tackle and play end in an odd scheme. We told him that. I think he’s versatile enough, to where we can do that.”
