Clemson survives BC

GREENVILLE – Clemson matched last season’s win total with Wednesday night’s 65-54 victory over Boston College at The Well.

Paced by Jaron Blossomgame, Avry Holmes and Donte Grantham, the Tigers improved their overall record to 16-10 (9-5 ACC).

Blossomgame scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Holmes had 17 points and a team-high five assists. Grantham helped out with 10 points and seven rebounds. The Tigers’ leading scorer is a personal favorite of Boston College head coach Jim Christian.

“He’s phenomenal…he attacks everything. He attacks the glass. He’s got really good touch around the rim — 10-12 feet out,” Christian said. “When he’s hitting 3s — he hit a huge 3 tonight — when he’s hitting 3s, he’s a lot to handle.”

Blossomgame’s first and only made 3 of the night gave the Tigers a 58-48 lead with 6:15 to play. According to Christian, he’s “an all-conference guy.”

Brad Brownell would probably agree, but he called Holmes the “man of the match” for his work against Eli Carter, who shot 1 for 17 from the field.

“(Holmes) was the guy who really defended at a high level,” Brownell said. “He’s done that a lot this year — just really guards hard and sets the tone.”

Carter entered the night averaging 16.1 points per game, but he was held to seven in 35 minutes against Clemson. The three steals by Holmes pushed his season total to 42.

“Just wanted to make him tired,” Holmes said. “He doesn’t come out the game a lot. I picked him up every single time, to just tire his legs out. He’s going to make some shots, but I just wanted to keep him tired the whole game.”

Offensively, Clemson came roaring out of the gate. Off to an 11-2 start, the Tigers got a pair of 3-pointers from Holmes and Jordan Roper, to go along with an old fashioned 3-point play by Blossomgame.

Trailing 11-5 at the first media timeout (14:49), Boston College responded with a 14-8 run over the next 7:05. During the game’s first 12 minutes, Clemson fell in love with the 3-point shot, converting 4 of 12 from the outside. For the night, the finished 9 of 25.

“We were just good enough offensively. We made enough 3s late, but probably took a few too many early,” Brownell said. “They changed their defense up a bunch and that probably threw our rhythm off just a little bit. We adjusted better, the longer the game went.”

Boston College took their first lead (21-19) with 7:12 left in the half on a dunk by Garland Owens. Clemson went back up 28-26 after Blossomgame put Dennis Clifford on a poster with an angry, one-handed dunk, which prompted a quick timeout by Christian.

The Eagles carried a 34-31 lead into the half because of some hot shooting from outside. Six different players converted on the 14 (43 percent) first half 3-point attempts. They cooled off in the second, converting on 1 for 9 shots from outside.

“They could have worn down,” Brownell said. “I don’t know. I do like to think our defense was pretty good.”

Clemson opened the half on a 6-0 run before Sammy Barnes-Thompkins stopped the bleeding with Boston College’s first and only made 3-pointer in the second half.

Down 41-37 with 14:59 to play, Brad Brownell signaled for a full timeout. Clemson responded with a 5-0 run, regaining the lead on another old fashioned 3-point play by Blossomgame. The Tigers built the lead up to six two different times.

The second six-point margin — compliments of Grantham’s third 3-pointer, pushed the score to 52-46 with 8:03 left in the game. Two minutes later, Clemson took — at the time — its biggest lead of the night Blossomgame’s 3-pointer.

Boston College was led by Clifford and Barnes-Thompkins, who scored 17 and 14 points, respectively.

The two teams will meet again on March 5 for the regular season finale in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Clemson returns to action this Saturday at NC State.
