PNC Arena is Donte Grantham’s favorite place to play in the ACC.
At 3 o’clock this afternoon, Clemson will square off with NC State in their 19,700 seat arena.
Clemson won last year’s game in Raleigh. In 31 minutes, Grantham scored eight points, pulled down two rebounds and handed out a pair of assists as the Tigers held on for a 68-57 win.
Not only is it one of his favorite buildings to play in, Grantham said it’s one of the toughest.
“They always bring a great crowd and the students are around the court. It’s a nice arena, nice place to play,” he said. “They have a good student turnout.”
Clemson is 4-4 against NC State since Brad Brownell took over in 2010. Though the Tigers won in Raleigh last winter, the Wolfpack returned the favor with a 5-point win in Littlejohn Coliseum.
“We had to play well last year and made shots in the first half (at NC State),” Brownell said, “And then had to just hang on in the second half at little bit. They came at us — their crowd got into the game.”
Brownell is anticipating a more physical game for leading scorer Jaron Blossomgame, who will spend much of his time on the defensive end guarding in the low post.
“The chances for fouls are greater, so he’s going to have to play really hard, because the guys he’s playing against are going to be bigger,” Brownell said.
That means reserve Josh Smith could log some more minutes. The senior forward from Charlotte has played more than 10 in ACC play just once this season.
NC State’s starting bigs — Lennard Freeman (6-9, 250) and Abdul-Malik Abu (6-8, 240) — share time with Beejay Anya (6-9, 285), who’s played over 20 minutes in each of the last five games.
Caleb and Cody Martin have good size, too: 6-foot-7, 215 and 210 pounds, respectively.
“Josh is going to have to be ready to play,” Brownell said. “We’re going to need another big, strong body.”
