Holden accepts walk-on spot

All Landon Holden needed was a nod from the school.

On Monday night, the linebacker from Chapman told TheClemsonInsider that he was accepted to attend Clemson University.

“The word…always was just get in, then we’ll talk,” Holden said. “Finally that I’m in — I’m just waiting on the report date.”

Newberry and Limestone offered. Wofford, Charleston Southern, Liberty and PC had preferred walk-on offers on the table.

“If I would have went there, I would have had some academic money and everything, so those were kind of options,” Holden said. “But, in the long-run, I thought Clemson would be the best the best option for me and kind of what I feel like what I need to do.”

Playing at Clemson for Brent Venables was too good of an opportunity to pass up. The Tigers’ defensive coordinator extended the invite last summer, after Holden performed well during the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.

“He always liked the way I played, flying around the field and everything — my hip movement, footwork, all those tangibles. We kind of kept in touch a little bit the last year or so and went on a visit last year,” Holden said.

Holden grew up pulling for the Tigers, so the decision to attend Clemson was pretty close to a no-brainer.

“A lot of people from my family went to Clemson. It’s just a huge honor to continue that legacy and go there. Playing for that team is something that not a lot of people get to do. It’s awesome,” he said.

Walking on isn’t such a bad option. Holden looks to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow as a bit of motivation — the former walk-on caught two touchdowns in the national title game.

“It’s very exciting. He kind of paved the way for walk-ons and guys like that. It’s great seeing him have that kind of success. Hopefully, I can contribute and do the same,” Holden said.
