Coach Speak: Chase Brice

For Chase Brice and Mickey Conn, their relationship stretches further than player-coach.

Brice, a four-star quarterback committed to Clemson since February, is the nephew of Conn, who’s been the head coach at Grayson High School for over a decade.

“It’s been good. We’ve got a good relationship,” Conn said. “I’m just proud of him.

“It’s probably harder on him than it is on me. Since he’s playing for his uncle, he’s probably had to hear different things that I don’t even know of. There’s a lot of pressure there as a coach and a player when there’s a relationship.”

They’ve enjoyed plenty of success on the field. Last season, Brice led the Rams to a 13-1 record and threw for 2,703 yards and 29 touchdowns en route to an appearance in the AAAAAA state semifinals.

“It’s been a special thing for both of us. For me, watching him grow and improve and become the kind of player that he’s become…I’m really excited for him and the opportunity that he has ahead of him,” Conn said.

Brice (6-2, 195) has been the starting quarterback at Grayson since he was a ninth grader.

“He’s got great size. He’s got good speed. He’s got a really strong arm — very accurate in his passing and he makes good reads and good decisions with the ball,” Conn said.

And, according to Conn, Brice has proven himself against some of the best high school competition in the country.

“I think the fact that he sees that speed every Friday night is really going to help him, because he’s seeing fast linebackers. He’s seeing fast defensive backs and different things like that,” Conn said. “I think that’s going to really give him an advantage.”

Grayson runs a hurry-up, no-huddle attack that’s similar to Clemson’s.

“The fact that we run the same type of offense, he’ll know what to look for. He’ll have game experience on what he’s looking for and what to see,” Conn said. “I think all that stuff is going to be factors that are going to help him.”
