For a second year in a row it looked as if Clemson was going to follow up a series win over South Carolina with a home loss to Winthrop.
But Seth Beer’s double to centerfield scored two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, while Robert Jolly drove home the winning run as Clemson defeated Winthrop, 4-3, Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Clemson (9-2) trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Beer finished the game with two hits to go along with his two RBIs, while Jolly was pinch hitting for Adam Renwick when he brought Beer home with the winning run.
Jake Higginbotham got his third start of the year for the Tigers. Higginbotham went 4.1 innings and gave up three hits, three runs and three earned runs. Ryley Gilliam faced one batter and was relieved by Pat Krall, who went 2.0 innings and gave up no hits and no runs.
The Eagles (7-6) jumped out to the lead in the first inning. A lead-off walk followed by a single and a one-out sacrifice fly put Winthrop up 1-0.
In the top of the fifth, the Eagles added two more runs to stretch the lead to 3-0. After back-to-back singles, the Eagles bunted the runners to second and third. Gilliam came on to relieve Higginbotham from there. Winthrop scored the first run on a wild pitch then the batter was hit by a pitch. Krall came in to pitch for the Tigers, and a sacrifice bunt made it 3-0.
Clemson finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but left the bases loaded. Chase Pinder was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then Reed Rohlman reached on a fielder’s choice. Eli White walked and then Beer singled to load the bases. Chris Okey was hit by a pitch to make it 3-1.
The Tigers then rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning as Chase Pinder singled to right to start the inning. Reed Rohlman then hit what looked like a double down the line, but the home plate umpire called the ball foul. Rohlman then went down on strikes a few pitches later. However, White was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second to set up Beer’s double to center, scoring Pinder and White to tie the game at three.
After Winthrop intentionally walked Chris Okey and Weston Wilson, Jolly came in to hit the game winner.
Clemson travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a three-game series with Wake Forest this weekend to open ACC play.
