Instant Replay: Clemson 6, Wake Forest 5

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 20 Clemson’s 6-5 win over Wake Forest to even the series between the teams on Saturday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark.

What happened?

The Tigers (10-3, 1-1 ACC) struck first on a solo homer from Seth Beer in the top of the second. The Demon Deacons answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Clemson tied the game in the fifth on a RBI grounder from Okey and a sac fly from Beer. The Tigers took the lead in the sixth on a wild pitch and added two insurance runs in the seventh as Beer launched a two-run shot to give Clemson a 6-3 lead. Wake Forest scored two runs in the eighth to cut it to a one run game, but Alex Bostic closed the door on the rally as the Tigers evened the series.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the seventh inning as Beer provided more fireworks with his second homer of the day to give Clemson a little extra cushion that it would need as the Deacons tried to fight back late in the contest.

What went right?

Beer was outstanding, hitting two bombs with four RBI in the game. Reed Rohlman and Robert Jolly also had two hits in Clemson’s eight-hit attack. Pat Krall came in from the bullpen and threw a career-high 5.0 innings while allowing the Tigers offense to come back and take the lead in the game.

What went wrong?

For the second straight day, Clemson’s starting pitching struggled as Clate Schmidt was pulled after 2.2 innings. Offensively, the Tigers were outhit and three players combined for six of the eight hits. Defensively, Clemson committed three errors in the contest.
