Clemson cornerback Kaleb Chalmers was arrested and charged with simple drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a schedule II controlled substance on Monday in Clinton, S.C.
Chalmers, who was in possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, was released on a $1,000 recognizance bond. The redshirt freshman from Greenwood is expected to be a contributor for the Tigers this fall.
Through an incident report obtained by The Clemson Insider on Wednesday night, the car Chalmers said belonged to him was parked alongside another vehicle in a vacant parking lot of a closed business called Palmetto Lanes. Suspicious of the two cars, the arresting officer approached the vehicles and noticed no one was in one vehicle and that two subjects were in the other one – a male and female sitting up front.
When approaching the vehicle, which belonged to Chalmers, the officer noticed that a male subject in the passenger seat was moving around a little more than normal. After asking the female subject what they were doing parked in an empty parking lot, the officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. At that time, the officer requested backup and relayed to Chalmers and the female suspect that he smelled the odor of marijuana.
Chalmers told the officer that a friend, who was in the car prior to his arrival, was the one who smoked the marijuana. He and the female suspect said there were no illegal items inside the vehicle. Once the officer’s backup arrived on the scene, Chalmers was asked to step out of the car.
According to the incident report, Chalmers exhibited nervous behavior when the officer initially approached the car. The officer conducted a probable cause search on Chalmers, where he discovered a quantity of marijuana in the groin area of his shorts.
The officer found an open cigar package that contained a green, leafy substance and one marijuana blunt.
The officer then asked both subjects if he would find anything else in the car. After they both said no, the officer told them he was going to do a probable search of the vehicle, which resulted in the location of a yellow bag containing five white and blue capsules of equal halves, which were identified as Vyvanse, the schedule II controlled substance. There was also a white rectangular shaped pill of four equal sections, which were identified as Alprazolam, a scheduled IV controlled substance.
The bag was located in the floor of the vehicle directly beside the driver’s seat. While officers continued their search, Chalmers stated that the officers may locate Adderall inside the vehicle. Chalmers then admitted to possession of the pills.
Upon further inspection of Chalmers’ car, officers found a digital scale in the rear floor board on the passenger side of the car, which Chalmers claimed. Chalmers was then arrested and transported to the Johnson Detention Center where he was booked and jailed.
