Instant Replay: Miami 9, Clemson 8

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 12 Clemson’s 9-8 setback to No. 4 Miami on Friday night at Mark Light Field on on Coral Gables, Fla.

 

 

 

What happened?

The Tigers (17-4, 5-2 ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo shot from Chris Okey. Clemson would add a run to its lead in the third on a Hurricane throwing error.

Miami (8-4, 5-2 ACC) took the lead in the fourth as they scored five runs on five hits and two errors. The Hurricanes would add two runs in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. The Tigers would chip away in the seventh with three runs on a balk, Seth Beer sac fly, and Weston Wilson RBI groundout. Clemson would add another run in the eighth on a solo homer from Chase Pinder. The Tigers would take a brief 8-7 lead in the ninth on a two-run single from Drew Wharton but Miami (FL) would answer in the bottom of the frame as Willie Abreu hit a walk-off two-run homer to give the Hurricanes the win.

 

Game-Changing Moment:

The game had a couple of game changing moments. The first moment game in the fourth as Miami scored five runs with the help of two Tiger errors to take a lead. Late in the game, Clemson battled back to take a lead but the Hurricanes were just a bit better as they won game one of the series.

 

What went right?

The offense had 10 hits, led by Reed Rohlman (three hits) and Okey (two hits). Wharton had a team-high two RBI. Pat Krall threw 1.1 scoreless innings while Alex Schnell tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. It was also good to see the team battle back from a 7-2 deficit heading into the seventh inning with six runs over the final three frames.

 

What went wrong?

The Tigers struggled in the field, committing four errors in the contest and leading to a short outing from Clate Schmidt who allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Offensively, the Tigers missed some chances early as they stranded nine runners in the contest.
