GREENVILLE — It’s fitting that a wild pitch scored the winning run in No. 14 Clemson’s 9-7 victory over Furman on Tuesday from Greenville’s Flour Field.
The Paladins’ pitching walked 13 Clemson batters and hit two more as they used fiver hurlers all together. All nine of Clemson starters drew a walk.
“It was not the prettiest win we had all year. We have had a couple of ugly wins so far and we talk about it after the games, but that is kind of what good teams do. They find a way to win in tough situations,” said left fielder Reed Rohlman, who had two hits and an RBI. “That is something we have done in tough situations this year. That is something we have done this year. We find a way to win and we battle.
“Furman played great tonight, but they threw a couple of wild pitches and gave us a couple of opportunities and we were able to take advantage.”
With the win, the Tigers improved to 6-0 in midweek games this season. Last year, they were 7-8 in midweek games.
“We talk about that a lot. Every game counts the same. It is either a win or a loss,” Rohlman said. “We have really taken that to heart. When it comes down to the final teams, just like last year, every game counts so we are playing like it is a weekend game and right now it’s looking good.”
The Tigers (18-6) scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth inning when Rohlman scored on Nolen Mullen’s wild pitch. Nolan suffered the loss for Furman, while Pat Krall improved to 2-0 with the win. The junior went 3 2/3 innings, while allowing no runs on three hits.
“(Krall) is such a good leader,” Clemson head coach Monte Lee said. “He is the leader of our pitching staff. He just runs out there and changes speed and throw strikes. The bigger the situation, the better he pitches.”
Clemson added to its lead in the top of the ninth when Chase Pinder scored on another Mullen wild pitch. He doubled to right center field to lead off the inning, his second double of the game.
K.J. Bryant, who was playing for Seth Beer in right field, launched a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at four. It was his only hit of the night.
“It gives me the confidence to know that I can hit the ball at this level,” Bryant said afterwards. “I just stepped in. I think have like thirteen more home runs to keep up with Beer. I’m chipping away.
“I just wanted to fill that void. I know he is not here. That’s why I hit that home run. It seems like he hits a home run every game.”
Beer missed the game, and will miss Wednesday’s as well, due to his grandfather’s death.
Clemson took 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Drew Wharton singled up the middle to score Rohlman, who drew a walk to start off the inning.
Furman (10-14) rallied in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead when Brandon Elmy doubled off the wall with two outs in right centerfield to plate Matt Towarnicky, Carter Grote and Sims Griffith. Crawford then singled to right center to score Elmy for the three-run advantage.
The Tigers battled back with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning when Bryant homered over the Green Monster in left field to score Chris Williams and Jordan Greene.
The Paladins regained the lead, 5-4, in the bottom frame of the fourth when Griffith reached on an infield single, scoring Grote, who singled with one out and reached third on an error by Pinder in centerfield.
Clemson rallied again in the top of the sixth inning, and took a brief lead after Chris Okey got an RBI to score Pinder, who doubled off the wall in left to start things off. Three batters later, Rohlman did the same, plating Okey for the 6-5 lead.
Furman picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take back the lead. Grote singled through the left side to score Overton and then on the next at-bat Griffith doubled to left centerfield scoring Grote for a 7-6 lead.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with one out, but managed just one run to tie the game. Eli White singled to right field to score Greene, tying the game at seven. Clemson had an opportunity to add some more, but Okey struck out swinging for the second out and Wilson hit into a fielder’s choice at second to end the inning.
Clemson will play at Western Carolina on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
