The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 14 Clemson’s 14-6 win over Pittsburgh on Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson.
What happened?
The Panthers (12-10, 4-6 ACC) took an early 1-0 lead with back-to-back hits to start the contest. The Tigers would tie the game in the second on a wild pitch before taking the lead with a three-run fourth inning thanks to a RBI double from Seth Beer and RBI singles by Weston Wilson and Reed Rohlman.
Clemson (20-6, 6-4) extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth as Beer drew a bases load walk and another run scored on a wild pitch. After Pittsburgh put up a four-spot in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5, the Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth on a Jordan Greene RBI single before blowing the game open wit a five-run sixth inning. In the sixth, Wilson drew a RBI walk, Rohlman had a two-run single, Robert Jolly reached on a RBI error, and Chris Williams hit a sac fly. The Panthers got a run back in the seventh but again Clemson answered on a Beer single before putting the final run on the board in the eighth on a groundout.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the sixth inning as the Tigers took a close contest and blew it open with a five-run frame.
What went right?
Eight players collected a hit with six of those players have multiple hits, led by a four-hit night from Rohlman. Beer and Rohlman each had three RBI as well. Pitching wise, starter Clate Schmidt wasn’t his best but turned in a solid 6.2 innings and the staff did not walk anyone. Defensively, Clemson did not commit an error.
What went wrong?
The Tigers gave up more runs than they would have liked, but the offense had their backs putting up 14 runs on 16 hits.
