Mustapha Muhammad, one of the top tight ends in the class of 2018, picked up an offer from Clemson on Tuesday night.
The four-star from Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, Tex. got the word from tight ends coach Danny Pearman.
“He told me a lot about the university and what the program has to offer,” Muhammad said. “He was just really straight-forward and a really nice person.”
Clemson’s offer “was a big surprise.”
“I hadn’t heard anything prior to this point and I’m just really excited,” Muhammad said.
Even though he lives halfway across the country, Muhammad is pretty familiar with the Tigers.
“I watched them play in the national championship and I followed them all through this year,” he said. “I know they produced DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins, two of my favorite receivers in the NFL right now.
“I just like what they’re doing with their program.”
And he likes how tight ends are utilized in Clemson’s offense.
“They put them out wide, in the slot and in the backfield, with a lot of different packages and what not,” Muhammad said.
A visit to Tigertown could happen at some point down the line, but nothing has been scheduled.
“I would love to, but I don’t have anything planned right now,” Muhammad said. “Whenever I make my rounds and visit multiple schools, I’ll definitely consider going to South Carolina.”
Alabama, Baylor, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, TCU, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M have offered.
As a sophomore, Muhammad had 19 catches for 321 yards and five touchdowns.
