Oliver joins TCI staff

Gavin Oliver, whose father, Greg, has been a respected journalist in the Upstate of South Carolina for many years, joins The Clemson Insider Staff as full-time staff writer.

Oliver, who will graduate from Clemson University next week, will be a recruiting writer for TCI as well as help our staff cover the ins and outs of the Clemson football, basketball and baseball programs.

“I’m excited and thrilled to be joining the staff at TCI,” Oliver said. “It has been a dream of mine since I was in high school to work in sports and to be a sportswriter. I understand there are not too many college graduates who get the opportunity to cover a major college program right out of college so I’m excited about the opportunity Robert (MacRae) has given me and I can’t wait to get started.”

Though Oliver is fresh out of college, he has already built up plenty of experience in the business. While attending classes full-time as an English major, he worked as a freelance writer for The Journal in Seneca, S.C. from 2012-’16. He covered high school sporting events, including high school football, as well as Clemson football, basketball and baseball games.

Oliver was also a correspondent for IPTAY Media from 2012-’15, as he wrote feature stories covering all the sports at Clemson in Orange: The Experience the Magazine, plus he was a regular contributor for IPTAY’s Web site, My Orange Update.com.

In 2014, Oliver worked as an intern and correspondent for Tiger Illustrated.com, where he served in those capacities until just recently. At Tiger Illustrated, Oliver wrote feature stories, game previews, practice notes and then game day questions and answer sessions with Clemson’s three coordinators.

This past fall and winter, Oliver had an internship with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits hockey team in Greenville, S.C. He worked in the public relations office there as he was mostly in charge of writing game recaps.

“I’m extremely excited to have Gavin join our team,” said MacRae, TCI’s owner and publisher. “Gavin brings a lot of energy to our team, and he is just another example of how we continue to build our staff, while making TCI the best Web site for Clemson sports. Gavin is going to be a great asset to our company and we’re excited he will be starting what we know will be a great career as a sportswriter with TCI.”
