The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s Friday night win over No. 6 NC State at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Wolfpack (31-13, 12-8 ACC) jumped out to a quick lead thanks to a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. However, the Tigers (30-15, 12-13 ACC) answered with six runs on five hits and two walks in the bottom of the second to take a 6-3 lead. Clemson would add to the lead in the fourth on a two-run single from Seth Beer to make it 8-3. NC State would hit a solo homer in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-4, but against the Tigers answered with two runs in the seventh on back-to-back sac fly’s from Chase Pinder and Weston Wilson. The Wolfpack would plate a run in the ninth but could get no closer as Clemson took the series opener.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the second inning. Trailing 3-0, the Tigers batted around in the inning and plated six runs. Robert Jolly had a RBI single, Eli White had a RBI groundout, Andrew Cox and Chase Pinder each had RBI hits, a run came in on a Weston Wilson double, and Beer plated a run with a single. Clemson would never look back and took the win.
What went right?
Seth Beer and Robert Jolly each had three hits to pace a 10-hit attack while Beer also knocked in three runs. The Tigers also drew 12 walks in the contest. Charlie Barnes overcame a tough start to pitch 6.0 effective innings while Alex Eubanks picked up his second save by pitching the final 3.0 innings.
What went wrong?
The Tigers got off to a rough start as they allowed three first inning runs but were able to bounce back. Clemson was also able to push 10 runs across despite stranding 10 runners.
