James Mitchell attended all three days of the second session of the Dabo Swinney High School Football Camp last week, and he is a 2018 prospect at tight end that position coach Danny Pearman will be keeping tabs on.
Mitchell, a product of Union High School in Big Stone Gap, Va., said Pearman mentioned the possibility of a Clemson offer down the road.
“At camp he said he liked the way I used my length,” Mitchell said. “And he just told me to keep working hard because he really likes me as a prospect.
“I didn’t really get to sit down with him personally, but I talked with him some during the practices, and once at the end of camp, and I can tell he wants to build a relationship with me and my family.”
What does Mitchell feel he could contribute to Clemson as a tight end?
“I definitely feel like I have good hands, and I feel like I can be versatile at that position as well,” he said. “I need to work on blocking, though.”
Mitchell (6-4, 210) has offers from in-state schools Virginia and Virginia Tech. He is getting interest from Duke, Notre Dame, Penn State and Wake Forest.
Clemson’s camp was the first of two this summer for Mitchell, who will camp at Tennessee in July.
Like many other campers, Mitchell had fun competing during the one-on-one periods.
“I really enjoyed the one-on-ones,” Mitchell said. “I think it was a great experience, just being around their coaches and learning new things.”
The camp marked Mitchell’s second visit to Clemson. He witnessed Clemson beat Florida State last season, and likes what he’s seen and heard at the school on both occasions.
“All the staff and some of his former players all talked about how good of a guy and coach that coach Swinney is,” Mitchell said, “and that’s a real good thing to hear, in my opinion.
“And that atmosphere versus Florida State was nice, too.”
