What we heard: Deshaun Watson on ESPN

It was not a carwash, but Clemson’s Deshaun Watson was every bit as popular at ESPN on Wednesday as his head coach was earlier in the week.

Watson visited Bristol, Connecticut on Wednesday morning as he appeared on SportsCenter, twice, First Take, the Dan Le Batard Show on ESPN Radio and then College Football Live. The Tigers’ quarterback also visited with some of the writers for a couple of one-on-one interviews.

On Monday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney went through the ACC Coaches Carwash as he appeared on SportsCenter, as well as several other ESPN shows and radio spots.

Watson kicked off the morning with a Face-to-Face segment with ESPN anchor Hannah Storm. The Clemson quarterback first spoke about what it would mean to win the Heisman Trophy and bring it back to Clemson.

Last year, Watson became the first Clemson player to be named a finalist for the award, which is named after John Heisman, who coached at Clemson from 1900-’03.

“It would mean a lot, not just for me but for the whole university. It would bring so much joy,” he said. “It would bring so much attention to Clemson University just showing that you can do anything at the university if you put your mind to it. It would go with all the work and everything that coach Swinney preaches.”

Watson continued, adding he isn’t or does not think about all the expectations of being the favorite to win the ACC Player of the Year or the Heisman.

“It’s all good. I embrace it all,” he said. “It is something I dreamed about. It is what I worked for my whole life,” Watson said. “I know God put me in this position for a reason. I am just going to have fun with it and go earn it.”

Speaking of being great, Storm reminded Watson what Alabama head coach Nick Saban said about him, especially when he said Watson was the most dynamic player in the country, reminding him a lot of Cam Newton.

“It’s cool. He is course a lot bigger than me. He is like a brother to me,” Watson said of Newton. Whenever I talk to him it’s always a good conversation and a person I can look up to.”

As for what Saban said him being the best player in the country, Watson said, “It makes you smile. I have so much respect for him and what he has been doing with his program. He recruited me hard. I gave them the chance to recruit me. It is just a great friendship. Whenever I see him we always have a great conversation. It is just great to hear. A great compliment coming from a great coach.”

Watson also spoke about what motivates him and if there was one person he could talk to, who would it be.

“Lebron James,” he said without any hesitation, “just because how he handles adversity and how he handles the attention. Honestly, just how he goes about his business every day. He is not just trying to be a great teammate or a great player for this season. He is trying to be the greatest ever to play the game. That is my goal to be the greatest ever to play the game of football.”

On College Football Live later in the day, Watson was asked about Swinney’s dance moves and what it is like when his coach is just with his players.

“We enjoy (the dancing). You never know what he is going to come out and do.” Watson said.

“I think he’s doing (his dance moves) on his own. I think he is looking up You Tube videos or something or trying to watch us.”
