The Clemson offensive line will have to replace two starters from a unit that helped the Tigers average 223.0 yards per game in 2015, and allowed an ACC-low 18 sacks. In this series we will look at the players that have departed and how they will be replaced this season.
In this edition of The Replacements we look at how Clemson will replace Joe Gore at right tackle.
Gore was not drafted, but signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins.
Sophomore Jake Fruhmorgen steps into the starting position at right tackle with the departure of Gore. Fruhmorgen got playing time as a true freshman last season and played well enough where the staff felt comfortable when they needed to rest Gore.
Fruhmorgen is a different player a year later. The sophomore has a high football IQ so the offensive schemes are second nature to him. He also worked hard in the off-season on his upper body and is now ready for the demands of playing 85 plus snaps a game when necessary.
Fruhmorgen and Hyatt give the Tigers two outstanding starting tackles and both are only sophomores.
Maverick Morris is working mainly at guard but has been cross trained so he would be available at tackle if needed. The same can be said for Taylor Hearn, who will start at left guard this season.
Sean Pollard and Tremayne Anchrum both enrolled early and have been doing very well during the spring and camp. Anchrum was one of the stars in Monday’s PAW drill. Both are ready to contribute at tackle if needed this season.
Many analysts have rated Clemson’s offensive line as one of the best in the nation for 2016. The Tigers will lose some experience with the departure of Gore, but Fruhmorgen should be a great one for Clemson the next few years.
