Clemson head coach Monte Lee and the Tigers picked up a big commitment on Tuesday evening from left-handed pitcher and outfielder Geoffrey Gilbert.
Gilbert, a native of Charleston, is one of the top arms in the 2019 class. Gilbert was also offered by South Carolina, where his parents attended school.
Lee expressed interest to Gilbert after his performance in the Diamond Prospects showcase game last November. After visiting both Clemson and South Carolina, he ultimately decided that Clemson is the right fit.
“It’s a big weight off my shoulders,” Gilbert told The Clemson Insider of the commitment. “The baseball program is great, especially with coach Lee coming in this year. Right when I stepped foot on campus, I figured out it was one of the places I wanted to be for my four years of college.”
Gilbert has a strong relationship with Lee.
“He’s a great coach who I’ve had respect for ever since he was at the College of Charleston,” Gilbert said. “He’s honest with you. He’s going to let you know what he thinks about you and how he thinks you’re going to fit in.”
So, how does Lee see Gilbert fitting in at Clemson in a few years?
“They see me coming in and being a two-way player,” Gilbert said. “They really thought I swung the bat well this summer, so they’re hoping I can come in and be a two-way player.”
As a freshman on varsity at Bishop England High School, Gilbert was the go-to bullpen arm and closer.
Gilbert’s goal when he gets to campus in a few years is simply to compete to the best of his abilities.
“I’m going to work hard and compete every day that I go in there,” Gilbert said. “I’m just going to work my butt off and compete as hard as I can, and hope the best works out.”
With the commitment behind him, Gilbert said it feels great to be a Tiger.
“Honestly, it feels amazing,” Gilbert said. “I couldn’t be more happy to be a Tiger.”
