Instant Replay: Clemson 24, NC State 17

In a battle undefeated ACC teams, third-ranked Clemson defeated NC State 24-17 in overtime at Clemson Memorial Stadium. Marcus Edmond’s interception in overtime sealed the win and allowed the Tigers to remain undefeated.

What happened?

As time expired in regulation, NC State kicker Kyle Bambard missed a 33-yard field goal that sent the game into overtime. On Clemson’s first possession, quarterback Deshaun Watson threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Artavis Scott giving the Tigers a 24-17 lead. As NC State’s overtime possession, quarterback Ryan Finley threw an interception to Clemson cornerback Marcus Edmond allowing the Tigers their 20th straight home game victory.

What went right?

Bambard missed two field goals and had one blocked. If he makes either of those, State’s is celebrating its greatest win in schoo history and Clemson’s is wondering what happened. But he did not.

What went wrong?

Clemson turned the ball over four times. One of the turnovers was a pick-six. Another came inside the 5-yard line and another came while trying to move the ball inside the 5-yard line. NC State also stopped Clemson on a goal-line stand in the second quarter.

Game-changing moment?

With the game tied, 17-17, and two seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter, NC State drove down the field that put them in field goal position. Kicking from the 33-yard line, Bambard missed the field goal sending the two teams into overtime.
