Wilkins, Tigers’ defensive front ready to dominate

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Clemson’s defensive line’s mindset coming into Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl against No. 3 Ohio State is to dominate.

“I mean, that’s just our mindset as a defensive line, just be as dominant, as tough and as aggressive as you possibly can be and just wreak as much havoc as you can,” defensive end Christian Wilkins said.

The Tigers defensive front has dominated just about every opponent it has played, and many expect them to do the same against the Buckeyes at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Because of their domination, Clemson has 46 sacks and 112 tackles for loss, figures that have it ranked second in the country in both respected categories.

“We’re lucky we’ve got the guys who can do that. I think that Ohio State’s offensive line is one of the best we’ve seen. They got the Rimington Award winner leading those boys at center. And you’ve got big tackles and a lot of … I feel like they have just a lot of good talent. And they’ve prepping the last three weeks or whatever,” Wilkins said.

The Rimington Award winner is Ohio State center Pat Elflein, who helped the Buckeyes rush for 258.6 yards per game this season, one of the best figures in the country. They also have an All-American in right guard Billy Price.

However, with that said, Michigan’s defense sacked quarterback J.T. Barrett eight times in the regular-season finale. In the last seven games, Barrett has gone down behind the line of scrimmage 21 times.

“I’m sure those mistakes they made three weeks ago, you know, they won’t necessarily carry over,” Wilkins said. “You have a lot of time to correct those things. And so it’s a new game. It’s a one-game season. It’s a new season. We are just going to have to be ready for whatever they throw at us.”
