Instant Replay: Wright State 6, Clemson 4

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s 6-4 loss to Wright State in the season opener for both teams on Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Tigers opened the scoring in the second inning as Logan Davidson led off with a single and then came in to score on a one-out single from Grayson Byrd. Clemson would add a run to their lead in the third as Seth Beer led off the frame with a double before coming in to score on a RBI single from Davidson. The Raiders would tie the game in the fifth with two runs on three hits, but the Tigers responded in the bottom of the inning as Davidson hit a bases loaded sac fly to make the score 3-2 Clemson. Wright State took the lead for good in the seventh as they plated three runs on three hits and were aided by a Tiger error and passed ball. Clemson cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the inning after Davidson scored on a wild pitch. The Raiders added a run on a solo shot in the ninth to take the opener of the weekend series.

 

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the seventh inning. With Clemson holding a 3-2 lead, Wright State started the seventh with a single, fielder’s choice, stolen base, and single to tie the game. Following a pitching change, a RBI double gave the Raiders the lead before a Tiger error and passed ball allowed an insurance run to score.

 

What went right?

Grayson Byrd led the offense with three hits while KJ Bryant and Logan Davidson each added two hits. Davidson also scored two runs while recording two RBI. Starter Charlie Barnes tossed 4.2 innings of two-run ball while striking out six.

 

What went wrong?

Clemson had several mental mistakes throughout the game with three base running errors, a fielding error, and had a passed ball. The Tigers also stranded 12 runners in the game, including leaving the bases loaded three times. The bullpen also had a rocky debut, allowing four runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings.
