Instant Replay: Clemson 6, Wright State 2

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s 6-2 win over Wright State on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium to even the weekend series.

What happened?

The Tigers (1-1) gained an early lead for the second straight day as Chase Pinder reached on a one-out, two base error before another error and RBI groundout by Weston Jackson made it 1-0. Clemson would add all the runs they would need in the third as KJ Bryant walked to lead off the inning and Pinder followed with a single before Seth Beer lined a homer to straight away center to make it 4-0. The Raiders would scratch across single unearned runs in the fifth and seventh to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Tigers responded in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Beer drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a Jackson single before Logan Davidson lined a single to right to score Beer. Following a failed pickoff attempt and walk, Grayson Byrd beat out a potential double play ball to plate another run and make the final 6-2.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the third inning as Beer’s blast gave starter Pat Krall and the Clemson bullpen all the runs they would need to tie the series and set up a rubber match on Sunday.

What went right?

Krall tossed 6.0 innings of one run (zero earned) ball on just two hits. Brooks Crawford allowed an unearned run on a hit and Ryley Gilliam finished it with two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. The Tigers took advantage of their six hits, seven walks, a HBP, and three errors to score an efficient six runs. Six different players accounted for the hits while five players drew walks.

What went wrong?

The offense wasn’t flashy, but it was effective. Defensively, two costly errors allowed unearned runs. Despite an improvement from yesterday, Clemson still stranded nine runners in the contest.
