After receiving an offer from Clemson in mid-February, DeMarcco Hellams didn’t waste any time getting on campus.

The 2019 four-star athlete from DeMatha Catholic High in Hyattsville, Md., made his first visit to Clemson on Saturday for Junior Day.

“I enjoyed the visit. The facilities and the campus are amazing,” Hellams told The Clemson Insider. “I enjoyed the coaching staff and I also really appreciated how their staff cares about the players, not just their talent. Also how they teach the players life skills.”

The new football operations complex impressed Hellams, like most of the visitors on hand for Junior Day.

“It definitely seems like a nice getaway to hang out with players after a workout,” he said.

Hellams (6-1, 195) already holds a dozen early scholarship offers as a sophomore, including the one from Clemson and others from Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

Listed as a wide receiver by the major recruiting services, Clemson is one of a number of schools recruiting him as a defensive back.

“I talked with coach (Mike) Reed and coach (Mickey) Conn and they talked to me about how they could see me playing for Clemson controlling the middle of the field at safety,” Hellams said, “and how they liked me a lot.”

Hellams thinks it was a good move by Dabo Swinney to promote Conn to co-defensive backs coach to work with the safeties, with Reed focusing on the cornerbacks.

“I had also watched the practice and I liked how they both coach their positions,” he said, “how their players really benefitted from their teachings.”

While Hellams enjoyed a lot about his visit, it is the unique Clemson tradition that stands out to him most.

“My highlight of the visit was touching Howard’s Rock and running down the hill,” Hellams said.

Can Hellams envision himself doing that in front of 80,000 fans on Saturdays in a few years?

“I could definitely see myself,” he said.
