Clemson Pro Day is always among the best

When it was all said and done on Thursday, Clemson had 81 scouts, coaches, general managers and player personnel from all 32 NFL teams at Pro Day on Thursday.

Of the coaches four were head coaches, including Super Bowl winning coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Chicago Bears coach John Fox was on hand as well as Tennessee Titans coach Mike Mularkey and Detroit Lions’ head coach Jim Caldwell.

Steelers’ general manager Kevin Colbert was one of three general managers in attendance.

“I appreciate those guys coming down here,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “It is always good for our players to see that type of interest. Not just these guys, but future players. It lets you know that if you put the work in and you pay the price, and a lot of these guys have seen these guys mature and grow up. To know that you will have those type of folks here … That just means they are serious about evaluating these guys and at the end of the day, that is what you want.

“You want a chance and you want to be evaluated. I know it is not like this at every pro day out there so we are very thankful.”

Swinney said he and John Fox shared a laugh on Thursday as the talked about the 2010 Pro Day when Clemson was hit with heavy rains as scouts, coaches and general managers came to Clemson to watch running back C.J. Spiller work out. Clemson did not have a nice indoor practice facility like they do now so Fox and Swinney had to stand together under a golf umbrella while watching Spiller workout.

“That was really kind of the spark that got it done for the indoor,” Swinney said. “It was embarrassing, but C.J. never complained.”

With the Poe Indoor Practice Facility and the Allen Reeves Football Complex, Clemson now has the best football operations buildings in the country. Scouts and national media members were wowed by Clemson’s new $55 million facility, which opened in January.

“To have a facility like that … It is one day and you want to give them the best possible opportunity and environment to be successful so to have this facility has been an unbelievable blessing.”
