Instant Replay: No. 6 Clemson 8, Boston College 2

The Clemson Insider looks back at No. 6 Clemson’s 8-2 win over Boston College on Friday afternoon at the University of Rhode Island’s Bill Beck Field. The Tigers won their school-record 13th straight game away from Clemson with the victory.

What happened?

The Tigers (18-4, 6-1 ACC) jumped out to a quick and early lead. Chase Pinder led off the game with a single and came in to score on Seth Beer’s RBI double. Chris Williams followed with a ground rule RBI double to plate Beer and Jordan Greene hit a two-out single to make it 3-0 in the top of the first. Clemson continued their scoring in the second with three consecutive walks to start the frame before a run came in on a Williams RBI fielder’s choice and Andrew Cox followed with a RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.  The Tigers added another run on a Greene RBI groundout in the sixth before the Eagles (7-12, 1-6 ACC) added a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1. Clemson capped off its scoring in the seventh as Cox hit a RBI single and Reed Rohlman brought the final run in with a sac fly. Boston College plated a run in the eighth but could get no closer as the Tigers took home the 8-2 series-opening win.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the first two innings as Clemson finally gave starter Charlie Barnes some run support with five early runs.

What went right?

Barnes made another quality start, allowing a single run in 6.0 innings on four hits and a walk while tying his career high with 11 strikeouts. Patrick Andrews picked up his first save by pitching the final 3.0 innings, allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts. Offensively, eight players picked up a hit with Cox have a game-high three hits. Williams, Cox, and Greene each drove in two runs as well.
